LINDENHURST ROTARY CLUB ANNUAL  SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

Each year, The Lindenhurst Rotary Club, as part of its committment to community service, takes great pride in awarding three $750.00 scholarships to qualifying, college-bound high school seniors.

The community arm of this Rotary club is dually managed by Anna Jaeger and Doug Madlon.  This committee's goal is to learn of needs in our local area and work toward offering assistance.

Family time for a good cause.  "A dollar can win you a $500 shopping spree and the dollar helps fill the local food pantries"  - those words get repeated quite often and the results are rewarding.

Lindenhurst Rotary Club's President, Bill, his daughter Amberly and son Zander share some family time to help people in need of food.  Club Rotarians take turns, spending about two hours each weekend, and before you know it the proceeds add up.

Lindenhurst Rotary helps supports seven local food pantries with its supermarket sweepstakes ticket sales.  Everyone at the West Islip Pathmark enjoys being a part of the excitement and store manager, Rose Minnick, welcomes Rotary for this event.  The winner gets to race through the store, filling up what ever will fit in a shopping cart in three minutes and can take home up to $500 worth of groceries.

We welcome the support of our website visitors and other clubs.  Tickets only cost a dollar and the cause could keep a person or family form going hungry.  And who knows?  You could be the one putting on your Nike's for a run through Pathmark.

On Columbus Day Weekend 2007 the Lindenhurst Rotary held its very popular Annual Octoberfest Celebration on Wellwood Avenue in Lindenhurst. This is Rotary's major fund raiser during the year. Funds collected go to assist local and international humanitarian projects.
What a summer and fall we have been blessed with this year! Thanks to another weekend of beautiful weather we had a large turnout of local residents who came with their families to enjoy the excitement with all its activities.Traffic was blocked off temporarily on Wellwood Avenue which became a pededestrian mall with local vendors exhibiting their specialties. The children had a wonderful time on all the rides. The well-know 'Clusters' rock and roll band played countless numbers of popular rockand roll music.  Pictured left is a photo of blocked-off Wellwood Avenue with the Lindenhurst Rotary tent set up under the Long Island Rail Road trestle in the background.

Rotary Foundation Seminar held at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck in East Moriches
On Saturday, 29 September 2007 Rotary District 7260 held a half-day Foundation Seminar at beautiful Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck in East Moriches, on the South Shore of Long Island. The weather was absolutely perfect just as it has been every day in September.  The seminar was especially designed for Club Rotary Foundation chairpersons. Everyone enthusiastically showed up at 8:30 a.m. for this "nuts &bolts' program that demystified such topics as "how to prepare a grant application" and "where do I get that paperwork?"

Thanks to the gifted presentations of Fred Notter (District Governor 2005-2006) and Marion Stark (pictured left), Rotarians learned:

1: How to understand the programs of the Rotary Foundation and the different ways to make contributions to the Foundation.

2.  How to acquire an understanding of reports that will aid them in their role as a Club Foundation Chair.

3.How to share methods of energizing their club to support the Annual Programs Fund.

Additional topics that were discussed included:
Rotary's goal of the global certification of polio eradication.
Ambassadorial Scholarships and Rotary Grants for University Teachers.
The Group Study Exchange - An International Exchange Program for Young Professionals.
Rotary World Peace Fellowships whereby the Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution offer individuals committed to such ideals the opportunity to pursue a master's degree in international studies.
The Paul Harris Society recognition program designed for Rotarians who wish to support the Rotary Foundation in a more substantial way each year.

June 28, 2007 - Celebrating 53 Years and Installating New Officers at Lindenhurst Rotary Club.  Jean Carney is installed by District Governor, Bob Tedesco, as Lindenhurst Rotary's new President, taking over after Evie Sosner's year of inovation and inspired growth.  We will miss Evie but look forward to Jean's leadership as a model of proven service and dedication.  Bill Smith moved into Jean's position as President Elect.

Lindenhurst Rotarians Help
The Salvation Army

This Christmas season Lindenhurst Rotarians helped the Suffolk County Salvation Army chapter raise money for the needy. Rotarians Dermot McGrath and Pat Chiodo braved the freezing weather as they jingled the familiar Salvation Army bell.

UPDATE: Coat Drive to Benefit the

Their mission statement:

"The Interfaith Nutrition Network addresses the issues of hunger and homelessness on Long Island by providing food, shelter, long-term housing and supportive services in a dignified and respectful manner for those who seek our help. We are a not-for-profit, volunteer-based organization with a dedicated staff, a broad base of community support and a commitment to educate the public about these issues."

Following a wonderful presentation about the Interfaith Nutrition Network at one of our recent meetings, members set about spreading the word about the need for coats and gloves to stock the free boutique at the INN.  Our community came through in a big way, keeping the staff at our designated drop off location, the Rainbow Center, busy accepting donations.  Along with coats, we received shoes, clothing, accessories, shampoo, soap and more!

On Thursday, February 21, members delivered a truckload of supplies to the INN and were provided a tour of the facility.  To say the least we were amazed by the quality of both the facility and the service provided to these folks in need. The experience was truly humbling when arriving at 10:00 am, there was already a line of people, children included, that ran the length of the large main room.  Most were patiently waiting their turn to "shop" in the boutique, others were registering for their turn at a shower.   Sad as this realization was, it was difficult to be too sad when standing in this main room with it's colorful artwork, of past events, hanging as mobiles from the ceiling and collages on the wall.  Nothing goes to waste in this cheery place!

In the recesses of this large facility were the many volunteers busy stocking shelves and bins with donated items, preparing food, and carefully wrapping utensils in preparation for the lunch that would be served shortly.   It was almost disappointing that we weren't staying for lunch.  Not only did everything look delicious, the cafeteria space was spotless and inviting!

Our tour nearly over, we stood about chatting with director Cynthia and sharing a feeling of gratitude that the INN is out there for those in need, when we noticed that the gloves, and scarves we'd brought were already being given to those entering without any, then we watched as one patron carefully unfolded and refolded his "new"shirt until it was perfect, that we clearly understood that the INN can't do it alone and were only too glad to have been given the opportunity to help.

2007 successes included:

Supermarket Sweepstakes, an event that offers raffle tickets for $1.00 each that can yield the winner up to $500.00 in groceries!  This year's winner purchased one ticket and left Pathmark of West Babylon with $499.08 cents worth of prime meats!  Proceeds from this event fund 8 local food pantries.

And the Winner is... Dean,.a long time Lindenhurst resident who only bought one ticket! See, you never know!  It was a day of fun and Dean stocked up with $499.08 worth of groceries. Only 92 cents short of the $500 winnings.  For all those who helped but didn't win, thanks for helping make this event a success and as they say "better luck next time".  We look forward to doing this more often.
Dean participated in our second annual Supermarket Sweep that once again helped Lindenhurst Rotary Club reach its "food pantry" goal.  The event raises funds that are then donated to eight local Community organizations who use the money to help feed those in need.

Other programs run through this committee are our Literacy Volunteer luncheon where both volunteers and particpants in the program come together to enjoy lunch, learn about Rotary and tell of their goals once they've mastered the English language.  One student, a nurse in her country, needs to learn the language in order to pass exams here to continue in her career.
